My major project for 1998 was a painted self-portrait each day for six months, four months of which are mounted on this site. Each piece is 8" x 10" and painted in oil, acrylic, and/or encaustic on prepared wooden panels.
This project grew out of my self-portrait series, and came about from my habit of starting out a painting session by warming up with a small self-portrait. These small self portraits captured a daily mood and had a pleasant spontaneity and roughness that the more labored works couldn't have. I decided to formally make one self-portrait a day to capture this daily quality, and to serve as a counterpoint to the larger, more finished-looking pieces. Due to my extensive background in printmaking, I am interested in the qualities that make printmaking unique (multiple images and the existence of proof copies that examine the artistic process). This daily painting project allows me to combine the technique of painting with the formal esthetic of printmaking. |
